By the coat first, then your preference. A healthy coat takes almost any length. A thin, sun-damaged, or partly matted coat sets a floor on how short is sensible and a ceiling on how neat it can look. We give you the achievable range before starting.

Shortening fur around the back end, belly, and inner thighs so waste and urine do not catch in it. It is not cosmetic. On long-coated and heavier dogs it is the single most useful part of the appointment.

We stop where it is safe to. That sometimes means an unfinished face or feet. You are told exactly what is left and we suggest a shorter follow-up rather than fighting through it in one session.

Scissors for most faces, because clippers around eyes and a moving muzzle are a poor idea. A dog that will not hold still for scissor work near its face gets a shorter, safer version instead.
