It does two jobs at once and neither is optional. It dries the coat from the skin outward, and the airflow lifts and removes a large volume of dead undercoat before anything is combed. On a thick coat it is more productive than the combing.

Not when it is done on a clean, dry, mat-free coat, because dead hair is already detached at the root. It hurts when someone drags a bladed tool through knots or works the same spot repeatedly, which is a technique problem rather than an inherent one.

An hour to two and a half on a heavy double coat including the bath and the drying. It is not a quick appointment and it cannot be rushed without simply leaving fur in the coat.
